Tang in Fylde Road, Ashton, Preston, has just been given the go-ahead to create five rooms for singing sessions above the main restaurant. The idea of eating out and enjoying Karaoke at the same time is popular in the far East, but Tang is thought to be the first restaurant to replicate in craze in Preston. Kitted out with coloured lights, spangled disco balls and TV screens for the lyrics, the dedicated Karaoke rooms will allow X-Factor wannabes to sing with their friends without disturbing others who have just want a quiet meal. John Chan, landlord of Tang, said :”Not everyone can be Susan Boyle—maybe if you are not a good singer ,you don’t want to do it in some pub.” “But it doesn’t matter if you are a bad singer here because you are just in the room with your friends” “It’s quite common in Asian areas like Hongkong, China and Taiwan. I think it started in Japan and Korea.” Tang has been open since April last year, serving everything from well-known dishes like crispy duck to more unusual delicacies like duck tongue. The upstairs Karaoke rooms are not quite ready to rock yet, with the planning permission to convert them from living accommodation having just been granted by the council. A downstairs room, however, is providing popular ,particularly with young foreign students at the University of Central Lancashire. John ,who has worked in the catering industry for 20 years and lives in Burnley,said:”Things like this usually only happen in Manchester or Liverpool ,but there are so many Chinese people in Preston so there is a market here. “you can have a meal in the Karaoke room or if you prefer,we can serve snacks.” “There is good food and people can really enjoy themselves.”
